Everything Greyhound > Greyhound 911 > Prayers needed for Lincoln

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 19 2011, 11:08 AM
Over the past few weeks I noticed Lincoln was not right. He didn't seem himself. His head would shake, heartbeat was faster, gums were pale and he lost weight. One evening he collapsed on the floor. After that we called the vet and made an appointment. After many tests they determined that Lincoln is anemic. His one count where it should be 55 was 13. Lincoln saw the vet on Sunday and they did blood work and he doesn't have lyme disease. Most of his results came back negative. They had to have one of the blood tests sent out and when they called us back Monday, they said to bring Lincoln back in Tuesday for another blood test. They wanted to make sure the one test was right. We'll last night is when we found out Lincoln was anemia. They did an x-ray to make sure nothing in the abdomin or other areas burst. That would be bad news if that happen. The x-rays were good. So, then the vet said they have to do a blood transfusion. So, Trish and I decided that we would have Bear do it. So Trish drove home and got Bear. They did the blood transfusion last night.
Bear did a great job with helping LIncoln. We got home late last night and Trish called this morning and the tech said that Lincoln ate his breakfast and the vet will call us later. If the blood transfusion worked they are going to put Lincoln on a steroid, sorry forgot what it's called, which will help.
So, later today we will get an update.

Trish talked to the vet. We can take Lincoln home tonight. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/Icons/emo-emo-th_sign0060.gif He has to be calm for a few days, so we'll keep him out our other house with Paisley and Ike. Trish and her Aunt can watch him. We'll be taken some meds home with him too. I hope Bear's blood kills all the anemic.

PRAISE GOD!
I've been on the edge of my seat all day, I kept going back & checking Facebook...I browsed thru EG but didn't see anything. Of course I've been on the 800# all day so just as I'd get to reading, then the phone would beep. So all the prayers are being answered.
Whew...
Thank you Bear!!! http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh116/KKtagShop/Smileys/hug.gif

Just seeing this now but was relieved to read your last post. Sending lots of good healthy thoughts to Lincoln and a big kiss to Bear, he's a good man. Keeping everything crossed for Lincoln for a speedy recovery.

Where going to get Lincoln. Update you after we get home.

Posted by: Pipi5 Jan 19 2011, 10:41 PM
If you're too tired when ya'll get home to post, its okay. Its just so soothing to know he's home with ya'll now. You can tell us about it tomorrow.
I've been thinking of ya'll all day long & checking every chance I got on here & FB. Sometimes its easier to just update one place so don't worry about us, ya'll need to get some rest.

Got Lincoln. He jumped into the car. Yippee.. He didn't do that the other day. Just got home. Lincoln is at our other house with Trish and her Aunt, Paisley and Ike. The vet said he needed a few days of quiet. So, no Suzy who likes to eat him and Lincoln and him playing. They run and play pretty good. Anyway, Lincoln looked pretty good except he looked real tired.
Trish fed him and he ate his dinner. She said he ate it slowly but finished it all. He then laid down on the dog bed and I saw his eyes drifting off to sleep. When I left he didn't even get up. I petted him and said we are all praying for you boy. We have all his meds, so hopefully those will kick in soon.

Posted by: Beryl Jan 20 2011, 08:10 AM
Just keep a close eye on him in case the symptoms come back. If they do there could be something that the vet missed - hope it doesn't and all is well http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/smileys/cheer.gif

Nice to have two houses. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/smileys/neenerneener.gif

Lincoln ate half his breakfast. His gums where a little pinker. When Trish go back from her other job, she hand feed him the rest. He might have an upset tummy. He did have the Big D when he went out but peed normal.
He did have a toy in his mouth and ran down the hall with Ike. How long would it take the gums to get back to normal. Lincoln had all his meds today. He still looks tired. I told Trish it will take a few days for all meds to kickin.

Posted by: Beryl Jan 20 2011, 03:18 PM
It is just like humans it will take a few days for everything to get back to normal, if the big D continues call the vet ASAP the same with the gums it they don't look right.

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 20 2011, 03:28 PM
We have a vet appt this Saturday for blood test and overall check. Hope all is well.

Posted by: inquisitive snoop Jan 20 2011, 04:44 PM
Some of the meds Lincoln is taking could cause the big D. Give him some yogurt and add rice to his food but don't make a big batch and use it little by little or get canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and add that to his food. The refrigerator life of cooked rice is only a few days before it starts getting moldy. Better to make a little at a time. Definitely keep a close eye on those gums - they are the key to everything. If they change ( lighter) immediately call the vet - it might mean he has a bleed somewhere in his body.

Trish gave him some pumkin in his food this am. Normally he will eat it. He didn't want it. Will for sure watch the gums.

Thanks for your post Diane. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/Icons/applause.gif

hope you make it with this snow - I know I 79 was having problems earlier

Posted by: Pipi5 Jan 21 2011, 08:20 AM
Sounds like Lincoln is doing alot better. Bless his heart. I think its neat that Bear could be there for him. They've definitly got a bonding between them. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/Icons/love.gif

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 21 2011, 08:29 AM
Lincoln ate all his food this morning. And looking for more. Gums about the same. Not any worse. The meds must be working. One day at a time.

Now if only Suzy would eat and not bark.

Posted by: Beryl Jan 21 2011, 08:45 AM
Hope your vet give him a good going over. Anemia can tell the doc many problems that might be occuring and it helps diagnose major problems.

Glad he is eating just keep an eye on the gums

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 21 2011, 10:46 AM
Our vet is an exert on greyhounds. That's his main breed he see's. He does see other dogs and cats but greyhounds are his main clients.

Posted by: Beryl Jan 21 2011, 11:09 AM
good he is an expert on gh - what I meant is make sure that he keeps checking his blood and watch his gums

Anemia is what helped diagnose Dave's cancer, if his blood test had not come back that he was anemic they would not of further tested him.

Posted by: inquisitive snoop Jan 21 2011, 11:54 AM
D2P, always happy to be able to help. Has Lincoln ever been in any type of pile-up where he might have been injured. It's a good thing your vet is a GH vet, there is always the possibility that Lincoln injured his spleen which is basically a filter for the blood. I'm sure your vet has already checked this but keep a good eye on his gums - first sign of change contact your vet. Gee, didn't like the pumpkin - maybe he wanted some whipped cream with it. biggrin.gif

Disclaimer - I'm not a doctor but work for a malpractice insurance company and deal with doctors all day long.

The only injury Lincoln had was as a puppy, he broke his leg. He never raced and we got him at 4months old.
We'll have to ask the vet tomorrow about the spleen. I as a young boy, I had spherocytosis and my spleen was taken out. My blood cells where dying off too soon, so they took out my spleen.
They did take x-rays and saw nothing, no rupture etc. Would they have seen the spleen problems in the x-ray? Trish has a long list to ask our vet tomorrow.
Lincoln seemed a bit like himself today which is good news.

Posted by: Beryl Jan 21 2011, 12:17 PM
Lincoln is not the only grey that does not like pumpkin - mine don't like it either unless it is in a pie cooked with whipped cream http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a60/dad2paisley/Icons/To20funny.gif

Posted by: inquisitive snoop Jan 21 2011, 02:15 PM
Should they see the problem on the x-ray - yes - but how many times have x-rays been taken for a broken limb and it didn't show up the first or the second time and the third there it was. It's all location, location and location -- how was he positioned when the films were taken, etc. One problem with being a vet is your patient can't tell you what his/her problem is and where it hurts - it's a guessing game and a lot of poking.

You mentioned you had your spleen removed as a child. Do you have any blood related issues because of this -- I ask because animals do try to shield their humans from harm and it's possible that Lincoln is attempting to shield you from any medical issues. For instance - I have a friend who periodically has back problems, at the same time one of her greyhounds also develops back problems - friend better, greyhound better at the same time. Go figure.

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 21 2011, 02:38 PM
I have no medical issues after I had the surgery. I can't donate blood which is about it.

Posted by: inquisitive snoop Jan 21 2011, 04:33 PM
Glad to hear that. I understand you're going to Ohio this weekend - have a safe trip and watch out for black ice.

Heavenly Father, we lift Lincoln up to you now. You are the great healer of all that You have made. Please heal Lincoln's body, guide the vets & show them what You want them to do. Put Your arms around Lincoln's family & keep them safe.
I listened tonight as a friend of mine shared a story about her little baby who had a rare blood disorder & the doctors told her that he might live to be a year. We all prayed for him & God healed him when the doctors were mystified. Connor is 15 today. So we know God is the great healer.

We brought Lincoln home last night. Lincoln's latest blood test showed the number went up to 20. On Sunday it was 17. So that is good. Hope the number keeps going up. Got Lincoln home and he ate 90% of his dinner. Then a while later Trish gave him some chicken. He was pigging out on that. Took him out potty all well with that and when Trish was taking him inside he had that greyhound prance. He hasn't had that prance for a few weeks.

This morning Trish said he ate all his food and was licking the bowl clean.

Checking to see if there is any word on Lincoln?????????

Posted by: dad2paisley Jan 28 2011, 03:34 PM
We picked Lincoln up this am at the e-vet. He was walking very gingerly. Got him in the element. He just laid down and slept all the way to our vet. Got to our vet, he wouldn't get up, so the tech had to come out and carry him in. It' not funny, but the look on Lincoln's face, like ha ha I am getting carried in.

He has lost some weight and hope today he will eat for them. He did eat a piece of chicken that Trish tried to lure him out of the car.

We gave them all his meds and info from the e-vet dr.

His gums look good. Almost normal looking.

His blood values was 18 down from 19 from yesterday afternoon. His white blood cells I think they said was 13,000 very low. We did get a match in case Lincoln needs another blood transfusion. Ike is a match.

The e-vet dr did a test and sent off to see if Lincoln is making babby blood cells. She also said it could be bone marow issue? This test will tell us that or not. And that can be a list of lots of things.

Yesterday, waiting for the vets to come in Lincoln did have his tongue out the side of his mouth, and he was playing with his front legs on my body as I laid next to him.

Haven't heard yet anything updated from our vet today. We sent out more tests yesterday, different ones. Sorry, can't remember them all. He is on doxicle(sp) in case it's Rocky Mountain Spotted ... He still on pred and meds for his stomach.

It's been a long few weeks for us all and Lincoln. Plus, my credit card is really taking a hit.

Prayers that Lincoln will get better soon and our vet can figure out what is causing this.
