This is my boy (un-named),,,,,uh,,,,, 62E. biggrin.gif

Till then I'm just watching the litter grow and enjoying the journey.

Nice looking pup. Any names picked yet?

Posted by: HoundIsle Dec 4 2012, 09:11 PM

I got a page full of names but haven't narrowed it down to 3. Since he's the "E" dog I'm thinking "Eddie" as a call name.

It's wonderful being able to go to the farm and watch the litter grow. I got to hold him while he was tattooed, I held all the pups in that litter for tattooing.

That is cool. That's what we did with Paisley. Watch her grow up as a pup, race and now retired.
Enjoy it, it's cool and we love to see lots of pictures.

We went to the farm this afternoon to get some photos, since he's the "E"dog I decide to call him "Eddy". He is just shy of 6 months old.

How is he doing?

I can give him a special topic area for pics, news about him just like I did with Hilda's racer? Let me know.

Funny you should ask about Eddy,,,,,

His big adventure began at 0530 on Sat morning when I picked him for a 2 hour ride to Jacksonville to watch some NOTRA racing. It was a wonderfull opportunity for him to meet many people, dogs, walk a Greyhound training track, smell a starting box and MOST importantly HEAR and SEE a rail lure!!!
The day was filled with "first" tooooooo many to list, he performed well a every task or goal.
The old saying a "tired puppy is a GOOD puppy,,,,,, he slept the entire trip back to the farm..... GOOD PUPPY !!!! biggrin.gif

Photos are still downloading and being prepared, I hope later today or this evening I be able to post a few of his "big adventure" .
Walking around seeing the sights and sounds

LOL His life will be fairly dull now till this summer when we start to finish him. I plan to take the litter to the sprint field in the "dog trailer" once week for some free running & play. Maybe in June I'll start box training using a lunge pole with a lure just to get them to run out of the box (no turns).
It maybe Aug before he starts running on the Whirly Gig and then the track, I don't think he'll leave the farm till late Oct or early Nov.
His registration should be arriving any day now,,,,,,,, waiting.

I took Eddy to the Whirly Gig so I could use a starting box for some [very] basic box training. He's keen for a lure so I used lunge whip with a lure so I could drape the lure in front of the box from behind. Held Eddy at the back of a open box so he would walk thru the box to get to the lure. After 4 or 5 passes thru the box I put him back on a lead while leaving the lure on the ground and started to take him back to the truck,,,,,, he turned and went onto the box!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

The other day Eddy got his nails clipped , ears cleaned and given a bath. LOL He did well till he decided the towel was something that needed to be chased.... so much for towel drying him.

This morning he was loaded into a dog trailer for a short ride to the sprint field with many other dogs for some free running.

Eddy's one handsome pup.

The other day Eddy got some more basic box training, a massage, nails trimmed and brushed to help him shed his "winter coat".

I am more anxious every day as we approach the day he moves into the kennel, a major event in the life of a future racing Greyhound.

I thought I'd let Eddy ride in the trailer to the sprint field, it's next to the Whirly Gig. I ask if could let Eddy watch as other pups ran. Sure let him watch, kept a firm hand on his collar as pups ran. Then I heard "Eddy is next." "Are you sure? " "Yes he'll go" Ok hand him off to a trainer and grab the camera.....

Took Eddy to the Whirly Gig again the other morning. Eddy and I were following one of the trainers into the WG area, she was carrying the lure preparing for his run. That was MORE then Eddy could stand, yep he made a lunge at the lure! His attempt was short, thankfully I had a good hand on his leash.
I positioned him for a hand slip as the arm and lure came around, he's off and running hard. As the arm slowed Eddy took the opportunity to leap forward !! He got the lure in his mouth AIRBORNE,,,,,,, the clip holding the lure broke. Now he has full control of the lure!! Needless to say he didn't want to let go of the lure and it took some doing to get him to release his prize
GOOD BOY! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
Serious box training is now in his future, he's ready for the next step.
I'm pleased with his performance, only next time let's not break something ;-) OK.

Eddy went to the WG Wed morning for his 2nd box start, good news he didn't break anything. ;)

When we were finished at the WG Eddy to the kennel instead of back to the runs. Another step toward being a racer.

His latest video is on the link below......

cool. loved the video.

It's been over a week since Eddy took up residence in the kennel, his transition into kennel is going well. He's been taken to the sprint field for free runs with his new kennel mates and run on the Whirly Gig.

"BIG" NEWS ----

Eddy is scheduled to go to the training track Fri Aug 16th for his 1st trip around the oval. Thanks to the wonderful trainers at the farm I get to "hand slip" him !!!

Posted by: dad2paisley Aug 10 2013, 03:06 PM Sounds awesome.

Posted by: HoundIsle Aug 26 2013, 05:18 PM
Eddy's appearance at the training track was delayed due to a minor injury to his paw. After 10 days of rest and getting his paw soaked in warm water & Epson salts he got to free run in the sprint field this morning. After some more free runs he'll be rescheduled to make his first trip around the track.

Posted by: dad2paisley Aug 26 2013, 05:59 PM
Get better soon.

Posted by: HoundIsle Aug 28 2013, 12:07 PM
Today Eddy went to the field for some free running along some of his kennelmates, later the trainers let him play/chase a large Kong ball. He'll probably get a few days off then back to the field for more free runs before he's scheduled for a trip around the track.

Posted by: dad2paisley Aug 28 2013, 12:14 PM
Cool. I love his face and eyes.

Posted by: HoundIsle Sep 4 2013, 11:24 AM
The trainers trotted Eddy behind the truck to the sprint field to play with his favorite toy, a big ball. He went wild as soon as I threw the ball, he loves to chase and beat that ball with his muzzle. After playing ball I took a little time to rub his ears and tell him "he's a good boy" before he was trotted him back to the kennel.

The long awaited day finally arrived, Eddy went to the training track Fri morning. He shared a ride from the farm to the track in the trailer with a friend's pup along with 50+ other pups. We took them both to the long box for a single hand slip run to the escape, Twizzler was slipped by Windy (trainer) as Eddy watched. Eddy went wild as Twizzler was slipped, I had no doubt Eddy was ready to GO when I took him to the line. I am pleased with his run.

This morning Eddy was hand slipped for a single 3/16 run on the track by one of the trainers as I operated the lure system. I am pleased with his performance, Fri he will run with one other dog for the first time. biggrin.gif

Friday morning, Eddy's first box start -
He broke well, moved to the rail in the first turn, good drive up the back and into the far turn, overall a good solid run.

It was a busy morning yesterday at the track schooling as there were many "first timers" to run before it was Eddy's turn. He was loaded in the box with 2 other dogs, sigh, he broke last out of the box. He was 3rd going into the 1st turn but up the back he managed to gain a little ground on the dog running 2nd. Then he made a move in the far turn passing both dogs to take the lead. As they turned to the front straight heading for the finish line he extended his lead easily wining his race.

Eddy's last two schooling runs were good, he's looks to be a late speed dog. I was told about 3 more weeks and he'll be ready to go to the track. Waiting to hear back from a kennel,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Eddy didn't break well this morning, he did make up the distance as the race progressed. He managed to pass the leader before the finish line. I pleased with his run & perplexed by his break this morning.

This time last year I watched 4 month old puppies play wondering about my pup's future as a racer. I watched as they grew into young adults and started to mature. The day Eddy moved from the runs to the kennel, the morning I held him for his first run on a track.

The next step in his journey is nearly here.

Eddy will leaving the farm for Derby Lane the week of the 18th, he will run out of the D'Arcy kennel.

Posted by: dad2paisley Nov 6 2013, 12:10 PM
I know having 3 pups it fun to see. I have to watch his races online.

Posted by: HoundIsle Nov 12 2013, 11:42 AM
Eddy ran from the 4 hole this morning in a 4 dog race, he broke last. He was about 3/4 of length back out of the box but he stayed with the other 3 into the escape turn. Up the back he passed 2 dogs and got the leader going the far turn. He kept the lead as they crossed the finish line, GREYT RUN! Fri morning may be Eddy's last school race on the farm.
We'll be headed to Derby Lane Fri to meet with his new trainer, then Eddy will follow soon.
Exciting times !!!!!! biggrin.gif

Eddy's schooling will continue on the farm for a bit longer, he's doing fine in his races on the farm.
We met with his future kennel owner/trainer at Derby Lane Friday evening to discuss his future. The evening could not have gone better, we so enjoyed the evening at Derby Lane. We are waiting for a opening in the kennel, so maybe another week or so before he departs the farm.
Yesterday started like most Friday's for Eddy, morning schooling, then we got word late yesterday afternoon that Eddy would be leaving Fri evening.

Today is Eddy's first day in a race kennel.

This afternoon I got a wonderful pre Thanksgiving message from Eddy's trainer, he is settling into life in a race kennel well. They took him to the sprint field for a easy run to stretch his legs with one other dog. He will get to go to the sprint field more this week and maybe next week he will start going to the track for morning school runs.

I'll post when he's scheduled to race and I can post a video replay.

I expect he'll run some Official School races soon, maybe around the 15th, depends how the trainer feels.

That be great. If you want your own posting section I can do that. I did it for Hilda when her pup was racing.

I figure I'll start a new thread when he runs his first Official School race, I'll use his race name as the title. So far this thread has mostly been his life growing up on the farm and training for life as a racer.

For now it just wait for his name to appear on the OS list and wait for his trainer will send me a message.

Okay, he's in my VK! I read the entire thread, this is so exciting.

Sometimes I wish folks could do this, go from newborn to racer to retired. I have loved my experiences with both Ethan & Pass. I didn't "meet" Pass until he was 10 months old, through pictures & stories, same as Ethan...but "being" there for all their races thru the internet.
I am so blessed that for Thurles' last year of racing, I was there physically. It's a great bonding time, great experience & it lets "outside" people see how they are treated & how they are molded into the great companions we adopt. You see them go from serious racer, focused, committed, determined, to the goofy pup that evolves.
Thank you for sharing these pictures & stories, I love it.
I met Kate in Abilene this past October & she is so sweet & loves her dogs so much & takes such great care of them. We met on Facebook because of Thurles, her family has been in racing for years & raced at Thurles Ireland. She actually taught me the correct pronunciation of Thurles' name.
Instead of Thurles, it's pronounced Thur Less. And he actually answers better to that.

Posted by: HoundIsle Dec 18 2013, 08:57 PM
Your story reminded me of the night we met Kate at DL, we were talking about the NGA Spring & Fall meet. We told Kate we have trouble pronouncing
Abilene as we named one of our dogs Aibhlinn (Av-Leen). We sometimes get tongue tied. Kate instantly knew it was a Irish name, the pup's sire is Maryville Rumble.
D'Arcy kennel's Golden Squire won a major Stakes race Sat evening, he ran UNDEATED in the series. Sat evening's win was his 7th in a row! Look him up on TrackInfo and watch some of his replays, you will see a pattern in his running style!
