I spent most of Saturday at home, off and on stopping by the TV to take in the races at Churchill Downs. What an event. For 140 years, we have enjoyed the derby.
As I sat there watching the spectacle, from time to time it was hard for me to not remember what has been lost in Kansas.
Once, we too were able to participate either as a spectator or owners, in the Sport of Kings and the Sport of Queens.
Admittedly we did not have 160 thousand people in attendance, but we were there, along with many close friends and associates.
We were just as excited in those days as the crowd in Louisville was this past weekend. We had all the drama, anticipation and excitement that they did.
Wasn’t it grand to see a small time mom and pop farm produce a Kentucky Derby winner?
We had that every day here. Oh we had a few bigger named farms to compete against, but that made it even more exciting when we small timers beat them.
The national media is making a big story about California Chrome and the mom and pop farm that went to the big dance. It’s a Cinderella story.
We had this every week, but the local media around here didn’t seem to feel it worth reporting. Our trucks weren’t shiny chrome 18 wheel rigs. We didn’t wear 3 piece suits and fancy dresses with gaudy hats. We were just plain folk. Dog and horse people from the heartland.
Kansas produced some of the finest greyhounds and quarter horses in the world, yet we got very little recognition.
The national media did a pretty good job of presenting all aspects of the sport and not exclusively the wagering. There is so much more than that. As a matter of fact it’s just a small portion of the bigger picture in racing. But alas, our local media and our local elected officials become blind to the big picture when special interest and crony capitalism take front and center stage.
The Wichita Greyhound Park, the Woodlands in Kansas City, Eureka Downs, Camptown, and Anthony Downs were once bright and shining stars. Big time as well as mom and pop were all equal here once the starting gates opened.
Will the Sport of Kings and the Sport of Queens ever return to its once gloried and colorful past in Kansas and others? Time will tell.
The glitz and sparkle of flashing lights and horns of the casino floor have taken the place of the pure marvel of our 4 legged athletes.
I may be old fashioned, but video games in my mind can never replace live action.
Are we gambling freaks? No. We are Greyhound and Horse lovers. The wagering is just a side benefit.
It’s sad that we battle the likes of Grey$K and their cohorts in crime.
It’s sad that people can’t think for themselves and resort to believing everything they hear from the main stream media.
We’re still here fighting the good fight. We will not rest until we once again hear the sweet sound of the natural trumpet blowing the “Call to Post” in Kansas.

F.D.
