I don't live near these tracks but have heard lots of bad news from folks, both adoption groups, anti-racing groups and just folks who wanna help.

Is it true that every Monday, trucks pick up graded off racers and send them off to be put down.

There is a lot of conflicting stories and just wanted to know if anyone near these tracks would have better information.

I don't know. But the woman who fostered my new girl, Kiesha, said that when she really likes a dog she can sometimes talk them into releasing it to her for foster rather than sending them to a lower grade track. My Keisha was at Derby Lane, which I'm assuming from her comments is a higher grade track. My impression was that this foster mom thought it was a really, really good thing for the dog to come straight into adoption rather than get passed down from track to track.

On the other hand, I think I've heard that New Hampshire has a no-kill rule, and they supposedly have a bunch of lower grade tracks. So it might depend on where they are.

Hopefully someone knows more than I do about it.

There are low end tracks where dogs disappear, how many disappear is only someones guess. I live kind of close to Monticello (JCKC) which is a low track, having been there twice,,,,,,,, it is a low end track. The few owners I know won't send a dog to that track, they will retire the dog first. I can say that some dogs are sent there without the owner knowing the dog was moved till after the fact.

Before anyone ask why did you go to Monticello twice?
First we went to watch a littermate of two of our GHs race, plus I wanted to see what was it really like there. I went with a open mind and let the place speak for itself, it not the first track or kennel I've visited. We did get to see the race, and managed to visit her in the kennel sfter the race. My wife and I drove home with tears in our eyes, we also decided to BUY the dog to get her out of that place. A week later we went back and took her home.

Why is JCKC so bad. The owners of the track don't care and dog owners? Can't the local govt get them to get better?

I haven't been able to find out what they pay or how they pay but it's not much. The last I heard OPKC was paying $50 somethiong a point. At the upper end, WI pays $100 to $180 plus WV bred money. If the kennnel earns 70 points in a week you can do the math. Kennels usually get 65% and the GH owner gets 35%, out of that the kennel must pay the trainer, kennel help, buy food for the dogs, pay rent and maintain trucks and pay other expenses. Some kennels don't pay the owners till the dog is a "C" grade or higher, not much money to be made at a low end track. It's beyond me why a owner would send a dog to a low track.

So a low payout is why this track is bad, not for what I heard of dogs being put down if they don't make the grade. Just wanting more info. and the accurate info.

Kennels don't make much money there and the track loses money because they have to run the dogs. Look at this report for 2008-2009 DPW Publication

JCKC made 237,285 off of the dog racing. They had 233 performances, that comes to 1064.00 a performance. The track has to pay the leadouts, the vet, the extra security for the kennels, the added electricity required to run the tote board and night races, the judges, etc...... that 1064.00 goes real quick when you have to pay all the extras to run the dogs. Not much left to help with adoption or fixing up the kennels and track.

JCKC has in the recent past already been in trouble from the state for not having a vet on duty during racing and they just got fined for not being compliant with state regulations for their cardroom too.

BTW :hello:

We'll what I have been told, they do put down lots of perfectly healthy greyhounds every week. They load them up on the truck and they are never seen again and the owners are ok with this. Shame on them.
I don' t know why they just don't close this track down.
