Yep I can't believe this weekend marks the first gotcha day with Smiley. It seems so long ago. It started with an email from my friend Holly, she fosters for GALT in Texas. She got this beautiful black male greyhound named Smiley. He looked older than his young 4 yrs, face was white, had alot of white on his shoulders.
He had been found as a stray in Waco Texas. Skin & bones, bleached out from the sun, down trodden for sure.
But he'd smile at the drop of a hat. He blamed nobody for his circumstances.
He had a high level of heartworms.
That was in June 2009. She sent me the email with a picture of him...I had just lost Gogh in February and had just taken an older seizure pup named Halo from someone who was moving. But he touched my heart. So I said yes.
We thought it would only be a few months & the heartworms would be gone, but it was 8 months. In those long 8 months, Holly wrote me notes, sent me pictures.
He spent Christmas, Thanksgiving & his 5th birthday with them...his foster family. I have no idea what kind of home life if any, he had before Holly. So she made sure his life was wonderful. All along having to go out on a leash.
Then on February 16, 2010 the 1 year anniversary of losing Gogh, I got an email that Smiley was negative for heartworms. The vet said turn him loose & let him stretch his legs. It snowed that day also. It was as if Gogh was letting me know he loved me with the snow & that he was sending me Smiley.
After his shots & neutering, then we figured out how to get him from Texas to Mississippi. This pup's passport is pretty full, he's been to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee & now Mississippi. He's visited Kentucky.
He just fell right into place. I told GALT he would have made the first time greyhound owner, the perfect dog. He's so obedient, so pleasing.
I've never seen a dog curl up into such a tiny ball to be next to someone asleep.
Needless to say, he's the answer to many prayers.
I'm going to post some pictures next.
Down trodden but not for long:

This is the picture they sent me first of him grinning.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/4.jpg)
This is Smiley meeting Pipi-Francine, that's Holly.

This is a picture they sent me that they put in the newsletter before they announced he'd been adopted.
That white face made him look very mature for his age.(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/aaasmiley6.jpg)
This was NEGATIVE day, 2/16/10.

This was taken the next day....he was just so relaxed, it was like he'd been here all along.

(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/Mar13673-1.jpg)
Nothing bothers him...
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/Apr03716.jpg)
We had some cat issues at first, but within about 2 weeks, everything was just fine.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/051810_1852a.jpg)
He loves Animal Planet early in the morning where they show the videos.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/snowy8/051810_0652-2.jpg)

He's just made himself right at home. Where he'll stay forever & ever.

What a life Smiley must have had on the run. I'm glad he found his forever home, and everything turned out ok for him.

Happy Gotcha Day Smiley!

I watch him sometimes when he's afraid to go outside in the heat or the cold or how he only wants to potty on concrete and I can't help but think he's afraid he'll be left outside again or turned loose.
I always make sure to either leave the door open or stand in the doorway with the door open so he can see me. Its heart breaking to think about the life he must've had.
I try to think that he was someone's pet because of how he acts and that they either lost him or turned him loose because they couldn't keep him anymore.
This morning its been storming so we've been laying in the bed watching tv.

Thank you all. Sometimes I think he celebrates every day. He is such a happy doggie.
We got up just now from our nap & I woke up & he was right up against my back. When I rolled over, I thought my hand was on his shoulder & when I realized it was on his butt, I started patting on him & he started nibbling at my arm & wiggling & flipping over/roaching & then he got up & started bouncing all over the bed & barking. Its like it was party day again. He's never in a bad mood.
