I hope with this adoption that Cesar will use an episode of his show to tell the story of the Galgo and the urgent need for their rescue.
The Galgo or as some call them, the Spanish greyhound, have been used for centuries as a hunting breed, primarily for hares in Spain. The problem is that cultural tradition in Spain is that many hunters do not take care of their dogs. In fact it is estimated that between 40,000 to 50,000 each year are discarded often in very inhumane ways. Hunters overbreed the Galgo and unless the dog proved to be an exceptional hunter they get rid of them at the end of each hunting season so they don't have to pay for feeding or taking care of their medical needs over the winter months. They then replace them the next year with young recently bred dogs. There are some good owners who will take care of their Galgo's and even arrange for shelters to take them in when they are no longer wanted but there are far too few of those caring owners.
I encourage everyone who is a dog lover and especially a sighthound lover to research the Galgo and help in any way you can with the shelters in Spain and the US groups who work closely with them.

Well I've always liked him, he amazes me with his love for dogs. Now he's just moved way up the "I like you" ladder.
Its too bad we can't catch these people & break their legs & bound them up with tape. I would love to catch the guy who left Smiley for dead. Mainly just to show him that he did not break Smiley's spirit. :handclap:
