WEST NYACK, N.Y. (UPI) -- A 78-year-old New York state man said he was perplexed to discover the U.S. government believes he died more than a month ago.

Karl Hess of West Nyack said he received a phone call from his doctor Friday informing him Medicare would not cover his July 27 checkup because the government lists him as having died July 5, The Journal News, White Plains, N.Y., reported.

"I was dumbfounded," Hess said Monday. "I mean, what do you say when someone tells you that you are already dead?"

Hess said he soon discovered his monthly Social Security checks had also been canceled due to his July 5 "death," and he was finally able to prove his continued existence by showing his driver's license in person at the Rockland County Social Security office.

A Social Security Administration spokeswoman said such mistakes are uncommon but not unheard of.

"We know how upsetting this is and we apologize," spokeswoman Jane Zanca said. "We work to fix the problem very quickly."

Isn't that funny how quickly Social Security put a stop on his money. They sure don't want to pay it out.
