YARMOUTH, Mass. (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man said his proposal to his girlfriend was nearly ruined when the shocked bride-to-be dropped the ring from a jetty overlooking a beach.

Matt Cawley of Dedham said he took girlfriend Stacey Scanlon of Needham to the jetty overlooking Bass River Beach while they were vacationing Monday morning in Yarmouth, the Cape Cod Times reported.

Cawley said he had attached the ring to an oversized sand dollar to surprise his intended, but Scanlon was so shocked to find the ring when she lifted the rock that she dropped both items.

The couple said lifeguards and beachgoers with metal detectors helped them search for the ring for about 4 hours before the tide came in.

"We kind of regrouped and came to our senses and realized that it's not really about the ring, it's about the two of us making a family together," Scanlon said.

They said the $9,000 diamond engagement ring was not a total loss.

"The good news is (Matt's) mom had it insured on Friday," Scanlon said.
