PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- A torpedo discovered Friday at a Philadelphia construction site turned out to be a harmless replica, police said.

Archaeologists working on the site near the Delaware River noticed the torpedo when they arrived about 7 a.m., The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Two men sitting on the replica -- and drinking beer -- said they and a third companion discovered it in the river off Port Richmond and moved it to the area under Interstate 95, hoping they could sell it for scrap.

Police Chief Inspector Joseph Sullivan said the bomb squad quickly realized the torpedo, which weighed 800 to 1,000 pounds, contained no explosives. He said a more thorough examination determined it to be a fake.

The men who said they found the device disappeared before police arrived.

During World War II, a shipyard built submarines in Port Richmond and the replica may date back to that era. The archaeological team is conducting a dig on the site of a new I-95 interchange.
