Well I was just about a permanent fixture at Southland this weekend. We had a birthday party for my BFF Cynde who's birthday was actually the 19th. Lots of fun, laughing & good food. Then yesterday I was back over there around 12 noon. Races usually start about 12:30, but Rusty must've eaten too much turkey on his day off Thursday & they worked on the railing he runs on for about an hour. Which meant all the races were pushed back 30 minutes. So I ordered one of their really really great hamburger plates & relaxed a while.
Thurles ran in the 5th race & came in an exciting 3rd place. I thought he was going to take the race, but he broke a nail. Seriously...
We took him to the shed to wash the sand off, I met them over there....and then walked him in the pen...his back left paw was bleeding so we rinsed him off again & that's when I could see his nail had been broken above the quick. Cheryl cleaned it off real good, then Moody took him back to the kennel. Cheryl got her truck & went over to put some antiseptic on it. He got steak also. he he he
It was really funny, Friday night I brought snack zip loc bags for everyone to put their left over steak in...everyone but Jay & Robert gave us left overs. So Thurles, Goldie, Stevie Pree, PhatBoy & Go Daddy got steak yesterday evening. More & more of them are getting added to the steak hand out list. ha ha :blkgrey:

12/13
hugz Thurles finally got to run his race last night, the lure pole broke off at the beginning of the 1st race last night at Southland.
The races on Monday start at 4pm.
When I checked at 5:00, they still hadn't run even the 2nd race, so I watched the replay on Track Info & that's when I saw what happened.
Alittle bit before 6, my friend Cheryl called. She had done the same thing, checked TI & then called over at the track. Now the races were delayed by 2 hrs.
Finally about 7:00 her friend Robert who works for one of the kennels called back & said they were now on the 4th race & were only taking 10 minutes between post.
I still went to bed & figured Thurles wouldn't even notice me if I was there or not & evidently he didn't. He got a great 2nd.
He led the entire race & then got beat at the wire. Those are the exciting races. The even more one will be me racing to Southland when Ed says I can come get Thurles. :blkgrey:

Me & Thurles on Saturday night. The nice young man with us is the "inspector" before the races guy. After inspecting each dog's muzzle & racing silk, he gives the dog a pat on the side. I've never seen them ever do that & he puts a sort of special touch to the whole thing. He was thrilled that he got his picture taken.

Last night 12/23...me, Cheryl, Jay, his wife Melissa, Ed & his wife Claire from Texas met up at Southland for dinner & racing. Ed & Claire were on their way to Indiana for Christmas. They have 2 retired doggies, then have some racing doggies at Southland. We had such a good time.
I did my mommy thing & brought the zip loc baggies and Cheryl took the steak pieces to the kennel. We had so much that ever dog in Ed's kennel where Gold & Thurles are got a bite of steak for Christmas. That's the most I could do for Thurles with him still racing. No gifts, no goodies. But he got some steak!!!
I get to see him on Monday when he races that evening. He has 14 races until his 200th race. I think I'm going to order him a liver cake. bleck but I'm sure he'll like it. :blkgrey:
I didn't get to send anything to Ethan either. I'm going to just make him a welcome back to Dubuque gift box.

12/27/2010
Went to the track this evening, Monday they have "twilight" races. Thurles ran in the 16th which was about 8:00 tonight. He ran good...ran in 2nd place the entire track & then suddenly a "closer" came up & stole 2nd from him. He didn't care, he's so funny. He rubbed his face on my gloves & legs...and then I got to go back with him to get his face cleaned & his eyes washed out.
Cheryl & I took her little girl Gold who raced right before Thurles, and Thurles for a walk. Then she took them back to the kennel for their dinner. I got in my car & came home, it is soooooooooo cold outside. But I'm home, toasty warm with my retired puppies now. Pipi loves to smell of my clothes when I get home from the track. I'm thinking that its conditioning them for when Thurles comes home to live. :blkgrey:

Thanks Tom, Rachel Hogue took that picture. It was kind of an impromptu. You'd have thought he'd won a stakes race that night instead of coming in 2nd. That young man is the inspector who has quite a following because he pats on the dogs while he's inspecting them. He was walking up while we were taking the picture & jokingly said he wanted to be in the picture.
You can tell Thurles likes his picture taken, he's always posing.

When I first heard of pre-adoptiong I thought what about the dogs already sitting in the adoption kennel? But then I lost 2 to cancer & wanted to adopt again, but not at that moment. Its hard to explain, but I think most greyhound adopters understand. You fall in love with one you see in a picture. You want THAT particular one, but not right now. Its like having your cake & eating it too.
I love love love going to watch Thurles run. He is so powerful looking. Last night's race is still embedded in my mind as he ran by me last night, focused only on that lure. Then 30 seconds later he's standing before me wagging his tail at me, rubbing his face on my gloves. Waiting to have his face washed, his eyes cleaned out, checking his toes. It is awesome! :blkgrey:
